Sorry to mention it if you were trying to forget the entire planet is in the clutches of a viral pandemic, but the crisis is continuing to impact automotive events all over the world, including the latest twist of the knife and another disruption to the Formula 1 championship.
Opening the chat for another WhichCar Weekly installment, Chris, Dan and Tim discuss the bombshell that could scupper not just Silverstone, but the entire championship.
Later, Chris explains how car design legend Ian Callum is filling his semi-retirement and the revisiting of one of his previous designs. Which begs the question, which other cars could benefit from a redo years after they were finished the first time around?
The WCW team throw their own ideas out there of vehicles that might not have been perfectly executed and a few ambitious suggestions of how to get there. Oh and Dan admits the time he offended Ian.
Rounding out the chat, Chris explains why he has been spending too long in his bedroom and night after night with a playlist on repeat - and it’s not for the reasons a good looking young man should be.
Motor’s digital journalist (or editor, as Dan likes to call him), has been going above and beyond the call of duty to complete a car project in isolation. Listen in to see if this nostalgic nod is heaven or hell.

You can expect to hear the WhichCar Weekly crew discussing electric vehicles more frequently as the technology becomes more accessible, feasible and attractive, and our latest episode is certainly no exception.
Sparking the conversation (and the electric puns) this week, is Ford’s utterly jaw-dropping Mustang Mach-E prototype which has been fired into the public eye by a sensational video. Besides the incredible figures and ability of the one-off heavily modified model, the noise created by Ford’s beast is the highlight for Chris, Dan and Tim.
Is this the future of high-performance cars? Will a new generation of car enthusiasts get more excited about the whine of a motor than the bark of an exhaust? Tune in to find out.
Next, Dan has been at the wheel of the newest electric vehicle to arrive in Australian showrooms. Find out what he thought about Mini’s full-electric foray and his one day with the Mini Cooper SE.
And finally, another week, another sweeping aspiration or claim from Tesla founder Elon Musk who, this time, is sticking to his guns that the range of electric cars will still manage level-five autonomy this year. Self-driving experts have wasted no time getting the boot in and highlighting the incredulous nature of Musk’s claims.
The WCW team weighs in with the actual state of autonomous tech and where the other manufacturers stand on the future of cars without human drivers.

It’s not the first time by any means that the WhichCar Weekly team has discussed electric cars and their feasibility for Australia, but the zero-emissions movement is gathering pace and the various state and federal governments have no choice but to get involved.
However, while the latest high-profile announcements appear to suggest our nation is finally joining the rest of the civilised world and making EVs easier to buy and run, the reality is sadly not quite there yet.
On this week’s chat Wheels online editor Cam returns to the WCW virtual studio to talk about the NSW government’s latest EV plans and how they still intend to claim your pound of flesh even if you are helping the environment.
Next up, we go from ways to use less petrol, to possibly the best way to use as much fossil fuel in the shortest space of time and Cam’s latest update on the incredible (possibly incredibly stupid) Cannonball Run.
Just when you thought the carefully organised and surgically choreographed attempts to smash this trans-US speed trip couldn’t be broken, someone weighs in with the equivalent of a rusty sledgehammer and bludgeons the top time to death. And we haven’t even got to the best parts yet.
Andy, Dan and Cam need little encouragement to chat about their favourite epic car trips, so that’s exactly what they do next, as well as offering some suggestions for cars that could threaten the new Cannonball run record.

Cars in film part II
Friday Jun 26, 2020
Friday Jun 26, 2020
Following our conversation and excitement surrounding the remake of the cult classic film C’etait Un Rendezvous, the WhichCar Weekly team assembles to review the Grand Rendezvous homage now that it’s out in the open. Did director Claude Lelouche expertly recreate the magic of the original? Was the use of an actual Ferrari this time round adding to the intensity? Was Monaco an even more stunning backdrop to this feat of world class driving than Paris? You’ll have click play and listen in to find out. Next up we turn the chat to another brand-funded car story and Aston Martin’s three part promo to welcome its four-door Rapide. If you wanted an example of one of the worst and cripplingly unwatchable car flicks to ever muddy your screens, look no further. Andy, Dan and returning WhichCar editor Tim pick apart this automotive abomination with all the mercy of a pride of hungry lions. Frankly it deserved nothing less. But from just about the most shockingly bad car films, Tim introduces one of the very best car docos to have dropped in decades - and it’s about an Australian icon. Brock - Over the Top looks at the life of one of Australia’s most loved but controversial motorsport figures, and the boys are suitably impressed. Out next month, the WCW team highlight what makes this story brilliant - no spoiler alert necessary.

Celebrating the fine art of cars in film

Friday Jun 05, 2020
With many Australians spending more time at home lately, the TV might have spent a bit more time switched on, so the WhichCar weekly team thought it was a great time revisit the topic of the best moving images of cars. Not just the best films, the greatest stories, or most memorable performances, but all the best vehicles captured in film moments from a simple Youtube clip to Oscar-worthy cinema. Joining the chat this week, staff videographer (and petrol head) Sean makes his WCW debut, offering an expert’s insight into the process of conceiving, planning and executing great car films. From the creative process, through the technicalities, we look at all the challenges and tricks to get a car feature from inside your head onto the screen. Later, the talk turns to other great car films, not just those produced by the WhichCar team, possibly including the imminent Le Grand Rendez-vous - an homage to the 1976 cult short film C’etait un Rendez-vous. Due for release on June 13, will this ‘remake’, complete with race ace Charles Leclerc and a Ferrari SF90 Stradale successfully create the same raw magic that original conjured some 40 years later? Somewhat inevitably, the conversation evolves into our favourite car clips and cinema through the ages. Sean reveals one of his main film inspirations, Andy makes a nostalgic nod to one of his most familiar race tracks and Dan, unsurprisingly, offers up another contentious series of films.

The cars we would buy and the cars we own
Friday May 29, 2020
Friday May 29, 2020
The WhichCar Weekly team virtually reassembles with returning guest Chris along with the decision that, as far as probability is concerned, the Motor magazine digital editor is now a regular. Following a recent article by Motor, Andy, Chris and Dan enter another round of ‘WhichCar would you buy with your own cash’ this time adding in a new level of complexity. The trio thrash out their decisions of what to put in the garage if it had to be your only car, along with the notable selections from other members of the WhichCar motoring team. Dan also defends his entry for the up to $40,000 category and offers an alternative because it was stupid. Andy has a rare moment of sensibility but in some of his new-car wish-list choices, and Chris proves that he is very much the driving enthusiast that’s willing to sacrifice comfort and practicality for his passion. Later, the team turns the conversation to their own personal cars. With covid restrictions preventing many day-to-day functions of road testing and press car movements, the team has been spending more time in their respective machines. Find out what the WCW team drive when they don’t have a major manufacturer to sponge off and what the return to some older models means to people who are more than accustomed to driving new cars week-in, week-out.

Friday May 22, 2020
On this week’s WhichCar Weekly episode, WhichCar senior journalist Daniel Gardner welcomes Mark Allen for a peek behind Jeep's global design centre doors in Detroit. With more than a quarter of a century with FCA, Chrysler and Jeep in his pencil, the head of design at Jeep offers fascinating insight into the way seven-slot grille models have evolved. The two petrolheads delve into decades of experience and find out Mark’s proudest moments, where Jeep design will go from here and the things he’d go back and have another crack at. And the master designer reveals the biggest challenges when it comes to creating the next generation of one of the world’s most celebrated and recognisable models. Oh, and Dan couldn’t resist dropping in a question about that crash too.
